MISS RYE didn’t even knock on the door to the private room. She could hear the whoops and hollers all the way down on the main floor, despite the fact that the Seaside Kingdom was well into their boisterous set. She’d expected some enthusiasm from the conventiongoers, but it seemed like things had gone a step beyond raucous. Pushing open the door, she found a group of six women sitting tightly packed on the long couch, two of them up on its arms like bookends. Their cries hit her ears immediately, with one of the girls, a drunken and freckled redhead, chanting something that sounded like “Yowie! Yowie!”

She blinked once before she realized what had the group so riled. Bailey had pinned Jem against the wall with his hands above his head. Shock trickled down from the top of her head to her toes, and after a moment of being furious, she was suddenly, strangely, turned on. With his free hand, Bailey explored up Jem’s shirt; with his mouth, he licked, nibbled, and sucked at the man’s neck. Dark-red hickeys like leopard spots covered Jem’s flesh, even a few at his exposed waistline. And her bartender stood there, eyes clamped shut, writhing into the act.

Suddenly Miss Rye felt more like Mama Margaret than ever, because Bailey’s hand had left Jem’s shirt and was dipping dangerously low into his pants. Another inch and she was going to have a full-on soft-core porno on her hands.

“That’s enough!” Miss Rye—loud at the best of times—filled the small room with her booming voice. Even in the fangirl din, she was loud enough to get everyone’s attention. The women went silent, and Bailey stilled as if he’d been slapped. Jem’s eyes flew open. He turned so red he might have been dipped in boiling water.

“Bailey! Jem!” Miss Rye barked. “Out on the floor, now.”

A chorus of “Awwwwwww!” and one “Bitch!” left the group. Bailey let go of Jem, who slid down the wall as his legs betrayed him. It was enough to distract the girls. The two bookends, obviously the most energetic of the group, ran to help him up and bring him back to their circle. Trying to decide how not to lose her customers while still dealing with Mr. Handsy and the Wanton Bartender, Miss Rye motioned them both to the door like naughty schoolchildren.

“The two of you are done for the night. Pack up and head out.”

“But we paid for an hour,” one of the women, the least drunk, said as civilly as she could manage. Miss Rye glanced at her watch. Fifteen minutes short.

“You’re absolutely right, hon.” Honey dripped from her words. “And at Under the Table, we like for everyone to get their money’s worth. How about a round of free drinks and thirty minutes with my number-one host to make up for an evening cut short? He’s got a brogue that’ll make you blush.”
